Past
Aiden was born upon a dying world. Some said it was their fault their world was dying. They didn't take care to preserve their home. They just took and took until the planet had nothing left to give. Other say that it was because theirs was a world filled with different people whom did not know how to resolve their problems without violence, and their dying world was a result of a great war fought with weapons of mass destruction. Then there are those whom say that their world was always heading in this direction. Eventually everything dies including planets. The only thing they did was accelerated the process. Whatever the truth, it was clear that their world was dying and they needed to find a way to save their people.
There were different opinions on how this should be done. Some said they saved the people by saving the planet. Theirs might be dying, but it wasn't yet dead. It could still be saved. Others disagreed with that. They claimed that there was no way of saving their world. The only thing they could do was prolong the inevitable. They said that this wasn't a bad thing because it would give them time to relocate the people elsewhere. Those whom supported saving the planet claimed this was a bad idea because they did not have the technology to relocated an entire population clear across the stars to a planet that they did not know for certain could support them. They believed that saving their world was more feasible than finding a planet millions of light years away that could support them.
Those whom believed relocation was the best--if not only--option said there were faster ways of getting to a new world. Doorways to other worlds have appeared all over their planet throughout the eons. Of course, there were protest to this idea. There were many unknowns about these different worlds, and it was thought that these worlds should be explored before they begun moving the population. Those whom suggested the idea agreed, but those whom are facing certain death are not known to be patient. People begun to move to these other worlds as soon as they learn about their locations, and any attempt to stop or deter them was done in vain.
Of course, many believed that these attempts might have worked if the world's governments hadn't been hanging by a thread when people learned of this option, and this thread had completely snapped by the time Aiden was born. He was born one of two children inside a small shack to a single mother. He didn't know whom his father was. He didn't even know if he and his sister, whom was two years younger than him shared the same father. Their mother never talked about their fathers. She gave them no clue on whether or not she had loved the man or men whom had impregnated her, or if either one or both of them had been the product of rape. She claimed that it did not matter how they came to be. She loved them, and that was the important thing.
It did not take him long to realize just how strong his mother was. She was the most compassionate person he knew. She did not hesitate to help someone in need, but she would not take anyone's shit either. However, no matter how horrible someone might be she never tried to kill them. This confused Aiden, whom had seen people be killed simply for looking at someone wrong. One day he asked her why she didn't kill. She told him because they were only behaving the way they were because they were scared, and one did not alleviate fear through violence. He heard her words, but thought maybe she didn't kill because she wasn't capable of it. A week later he discovered just how wrong he was. He and his sister were exploring the ruins near there home when they were attacked.
Aiden didn't know the reason for the attack, and at the moment their reasons did not matter. The only thing he knew was his sister was in danger. It didn't even cross his mind that he was in just as much danger as she. He grabbed a pipe, and moved between his sister and the one whom were attacking them. He told her to run, and ran she did. She ran right to their mother and told her what was happening. Their mother wasted no time getting to where Aiden was at, but much can happen within a few seconds, and by the time his mother arrived that pipe he had grabbed had been ripped from his hands and his attacker had seized him, and proceeded to do things to him that Aiden thought was only reserved for adults.
His mother had picked that pipe Aiden had been swinging just moments before, and bashed his attacker's head in until it was nothing more than a gooey mess. Once she was done, she took Aiden into her arms and rocked him while he sobbed. He has no idea how long he remained there. His mother didn't rush his tears. In fact, she didn't say anything. She just hold him and allowed him to cry for however long he needed. When he finally pulled away the confusion must have been evident upon his face, because his mother asked what is it. He wasted no time in asking his mother why she had killed the man. He thought she didn't kill. He was so proud of himself for not saying he had thought she was incapable of killing.
His mother smiled and took him within her arms once again then told him that a mama bear always makes exceptions when it comes to protecting her cubs. She was silent for a few moments before telling him that killing should never be easy. He should not turn to such actions as the first solution to a problem, but at the same time he should realized that it might be the only answer. When that happens he should never hesitate. Only he can decide when those moments are, and he might find himself killing more readily than she because only he can decide what is important enough to kill for---whether it is a person or idea. And if he is willing to kill for something he should be just as willing to die for it. He didn't completely understand what his mother meant, but he nodded his head as if he got it.
They returned home, and for several weeks his mother's words turned within his head. He decided that his family--his mother and sister--was important enough to kill and die for. He would do anything within his power to protect them, and so he decided to teach himself how to fight. It didn't take his mother long to figure out what he was doing, and she begun to teach him what she knew, which turned out to be quite a bit. Eventually, his sister joined in these lessons. Whether it was because she saw the benefit behind knowing how to fight or only merely wished to learn how because she wanted to be like her big brother was anyone's guess. Life was good. It was far from perfect, but they had managed to make a happy existence in a world ruled by chaos.
Aiden believed that this was how it was always going to be. That is until a few weeks after his fourteenth birthday. He returned home from a day of fishing to find that small shack where he had lived with his mother and sister had been ransacked and both his mother and sister was missing. He thought they might have fled the scene as whomever had attacked them were stronger than them or perhaps they had not been there when the attack happened. He believed that if it was either option they would not be far. They never wondered far. And if they had fled they would know he would return, and would come searching for them. In fact, they had set up secret hiding spot they could flee to if their house had been attacked.
He checked there first, but found it empty. He begun to search the area between that hiding space and their home, but found nothing. He returned home to see if he could uncover the answer to what might have happened to them there. He started to open the door when a voice told him they were taken. He turned around to find a ten year old girl standing there. He was not surprised to find her. People often came to his mother for help---especially children. They knew her roof was a safe haven--a place where a nice warm bed and a hot meal could be found. The girl's words suggested that she had been here when the attack had been made. He asked her where they were taken. She told him a world called Asharial. She didn't know which gateway lead to this world. She slipped away before they could reach it. She apologized for not trying harder to save his mother and sister. They had been nice to her. In fact, she wouldn't have escaped if it wasn't for them.
Aiden told her that he didn't blame her. He knew both his mother and sister had sacrificed themselves so this girl could escape. Perhaps, they hoped she would find her way back to this shack to tell him what had happened. The only thing he needed to do was find this world called Asharial, but he knew that was easier said than done. He had no information about this world other than its name, but he wasn't going to give up. He packed his things, and the ten year old asked if she could come with him. Not to Asharial she told him, but to travel with him until he found this world. She didn't want to be alone. He told her that it would not be easy, and she responded by telling him that it could be no worse than what she had already endured.
He only smiled at those words before saying she could join him if she wished. They became traveling companions, and as the years passed they eventually became lovers. During this time he learned what the gateway to Asharial looked like---a house. He came to know exactly what this house looked like. Two years after learning exactly what the house look like he came upon it. He started at it in disbelief. He had not expected to stumble upon it by accident, but than again why shouldn't he. It wasn't like one needed to chant a special spell to find these different gateways that was scattered all over their world. He knew what he had to do. He had to go into the house and thus enter the world of Asharial, but before he could take a step towards a house his lover grabbed his arm.
She begged him not to go. She told him that this was his home that he should stay here, and fight for his people here. He thought she was merely afraid of losing him. People whom entered these gateways are often never heard from again. He knew she would not come with him. He didn't even have to ask for him to know this. He promised that he would return to her. She told him with tears flowing freely down her face that no he won't. Once Asharial has him it will never let him go. He is too precious. He only smiled at her words telling her that even what she said was true he had to go. His family was there, and he made a promise to protect them long ago. The last thing she told him before he entered the house was they might be dead. He paused with the door opened, turned to look at her with the tears streaming down her face and told her that just might be, but he won't know that if he stayed here.
With that said, he entered the house and found himself within another world. It was immediately clear that Asharial was different than the one he came from. It's air smelt different. It took him a few moments to realize this what fresh--unpolluted---air smelt like. He begun to explore this world. He would find no great cities with soaring metal building stretching on for miles, but instead he would find vast wilderness--mostly forest with small villages scattered all over. He found the people of this world very accepting of stranger. They did not hesitate to take him into their home, and provide him with a place to sleep for the night and a hot meal. Much of their attitudes reminded him of his mother, and that what made him fall in love with them. It was than that he realized that his lover had been right. He would not return to his old world. He loved this world too much to leave it. There was something about it that screamed home in ways that his old world never did.
It might be Asharial's influence. He didn't know nor did he care. He just knew that he would do anything to protect this world and the people within it. He had not forgotten about his promise to protect his mother and sister, but he knew if he found them alive that if they decided to return to their old world he would not be going with them. He traveled around the world becoming a hero of sorts. It was not his desire to protect this world and its people that helped him gain this reputation, but rather the simple fact he had been raised not to take anything for free. Whenever someone gave him a roof over his head for the night or a hot meal he would repay them by offering to aid them with whatever they needed help with. At first, it was things like painting a fence, digging a well or mending a leaky roof but eventually it turned into more what people might think as more heroic deeds---slaying the monsters and saving the damsels in distress.
It was during one of these slaying the monster mission that he met her--a witch by the name of Nnenia. She was a shop keeper that made charms and potions for travelers and heroes like him. There was something about her that drew him, and he would find himself visiting her shop often, and the feeling seemed to be mutual as she would provide him potions and charms for free, claiming that the idea of anything happening to him filled her with such dread that she had to do what she could to protect him, and she knew she could not ask him give up his sword. He was not that type of man, and she would not love him so if he was. Aiden did not know she was in alliance with the great wolf. He had heard of the great wolf, but never encountered him. In fact, some part of him believed the great wolf was nothing more than stories.
Through, it was clear to him that the people of Asharial believed in these stories. When it came to traveling the forest that separated their villages they did not do so willy nilly. Many were even afraid to travel it--more so when they claimed there was sign of the great wolf being about. However, he eventually come to learn that the great wolf was very real. He had just gotten done making love to Nnenia when she gave him an amulet. The great wolf liked collecting people and forcing them to become his, and she decided that the great wolf would love to have Aiden. The amulet she had given him would suppress his power as well as act as a tracking device for the great wolf . However, She told Aiden that it had healing properties--that it would take away the sting of any injuries he might receive on his journey. Aiden did not care what type of spell had been infused into the amulet. It was a gift from her, and that was all that mattered to him. He thanked her for the gift, kissed her goodbye before returning to the village he had been staying within.
He was almost to the village when he felt something was off. He felt strange--not at all like himself--and than sicking suspicion hit him. It was the amulet. He knew he had been betrayed, but didn't know the reason for it. He decided that was something he'll have to worry about later because right now the more important thing was getting the amulet off. He tried to remove the amulet but to no avail. Than he heard a low rumbling--almost thunderous sound--behind him and with every passing second the sound grew loud. He turned to find the great wolf and his horde heading towards him. He might not have ever seen the great wolf and his horde, but he heard enough of the stories to know what his horde looked like.
He knew he had to get to safety of a village. The great wolf never took someone directly from one of the many villages that were scattered around the forest that covered almost every inch of Asharial. It was why a number of people never left the safety of their villages. He knew if he just reached the village he had been staying within that he would be out of harms way and perhaps there he could figure out a way to remove the amulet. It was just up ahead. In fact, it was so close he could see its outline. He decided to make a break for it, but he was not fast enough. The great wolf seized him just seconds before he reached the safety of the village.
Aiden was taken to the great wolf's lair where he was turned into his pet, and the only other person the great wolf allowed to use Aiden for pleasure was his daughter. It didn't take Aiden long to realized that his daughter was precious to the great wolf. There was nothing he wouldn't do for her or give her. She only needed to tell her father she wanted something and it was hers. He learned that many regarded her as a half-breed--mostly due to the fact her mother had been from Aiden's world. However, try as he might he couldn't figure out what happened to her mother. Whether she was dead or had left her daughter within the custody of her father--either by her own will or another's. The only thing that was known was her mother was not within the picture.
Not surprising there were many within the Great wolf's lair whom had been brought there as pets or personal playthings, but with the passage of time many of those that the great wolf had collected would become a full fledged member of his horde. This was a fate Aiden did not want, and he was not the only one whom refused to submit to the great wolf's will. The great wolf's mate didn't as well. It was a decision that many within the horde thought she was foolish for. It was a great honor to be the great wolf's mate. She should be relishing within the benefits of this positions instead of being treated as nothing more than a favorite pet. Aiden couldn't help watching the cruel way the great wolf treated his mate and thinking if this is the way he treats his favorite pet he didn't want to know how he treated his least favorite.
Through, many--included the great wolf's mate--claimed that cruelty flung upon her had more to do with her refusal to submit to the great wolf's will than being considered her favorite pet. He asked her why she didn't submit, and she told him the same reason he didn't. That the suffering was preferable to submission. The two of them grew close, and eventually became lovers. It was during their pillow talks that she suggested he kill the great wolf. He stared at her in disbelief before saying he thought that such a thing was impossible, at least that what everyone said. His lover told him that it could not be done if he tried to do it at this very moment. He had to get close to the great wolf. He had to earn his trust. Aiden needed to make the great wolf believe he worshiped the very ground he walked upon. The great wolf would not suspect betrayal for someone whom regarded him in such a way, and it would be this lack of suspicion that would allow him to do what many deemed to be impossible.
Aiden did just that. It didn't take him long to replace the great wolf's mate as the favorite pet, and not long after that he became more--a trusted general within the great wolf's horde, and the alpha of one of the many packs that the great wolf had divided his horde into. Than the moment that Aiden was waiting for arrived, and with the help of the great wolf's mate he killed the great wolf. However, before he had a chance to celebrate the witch whom had betrayed him appeared. She told him that he was a fool if he thought it was that easy. The great wolf cannot truly be killed, and before he could inquire what she meant he passed out.

Present
He came to discover exactly what Nnenia had meant upon waking up. By slaying the great wolf he had become the great wolf. He was horrified by this news. He had seen the horrors of the great wolf. Not just in the deeds that he had witness the great wolf do with his own eyes, but from the fear that radiated from the stories that the people of Asharial told. He did not wish for anyone to speak of him in such a manner. More than that he did not wish for his mother or sister, whom he was still looking for, hear of him in such a manner. He vowed to find a way to end the great wolf and his evil once and for all.
He knew that such a task would not be easy, and he was not surprised to find the witch whom had betrayed him spoke up against it. He thought this was merely because she wished to keep the great wolf and the horrors associated with the great wolf alive. He thought she got pleasure for the suffering that rose within the great wolf and his horde's wake. He knew that she had a relationship with the previous great wolf, and if she kept him from doing what he dreamed of doing she could have that same type of relationship with him, and things could return to the way it had been before he killed her lover.
However, it came to his attention thing might be more complicated than that. It was true that Nnenia had betrayed him, but only because she believed that not only he was capable of killing the great wolf but also capable of not being corrupted by his powers, at least she hoped. She had believed the same thing by his predecessors and all for those whom had came before---aside from the one whom had killed the original great wolf on his own accord. She had been there since the beginning, and told him the story of how the great wolf came to be. A story that she is directly and personally connected to.
She had loved the man whom had been the very first great wolf, but she was not the only one whom had such feelings for him. Her sister desired him, as well. He loved Nnenia not her sister, but her sister was not used to rejection. She decided to make him hers by calling forth an ancient force to bind him to her will, but Nnenia knew the danger of this. She knew what would happen to the world if this force is released upon the world. It would destroy Asharial. Not because it is evil, but merely because it was a destructive force. She killed her sister, and by doing so she kept her sister's spell from being completed in the manner she had intended.
She believes that there is no way to send this ancient force back whence it had came, and the only way to keep it from destroying her world is to keep it sealed within those whom have taken on the identity of the great wolf. She believes or perhaps it is merely hopes that there is someone whom can harness the power of this ancient force without being corrupted by it. She has hand picked those whom she believed is capable to the task, but so far each and every one of them had ended up a disappointment. Aiden doesn't know whether or not he should completely believe her. He doesn't doubt the truth behind her tale, but he does question her motivation for preserving the identity of the great wolf.
Deep down he knows this is foolish, but he is still hurt by her betrayal and he believes it if wasn't for her that he wouldn't be cursed as monster and fighting for his very soul. There is a part of him that wished to destroy the great wolf just to spit her. He can just imagine the look upon her face as does what she had deemed impossible, but he will not give into such desires. He loved this world to much to put his need for revenge before the need of its people, and if the corruption of his soul is the price he has to pay to keep them safe than it is one he is more than willing to pay. However, this does not mean he will not try to destroy the great wolf or even send the ancient force that had been brought forth to create the great wolf back whence it had came, because he will. He will find a way to permanently end the threat of this ancient destructive force upon Asharial.
